Chennai, India. We have just arrived from the Andaman Islands and the extent of the Tsunami’s devastation is only just starting to hit home. Sleeping in a simple hut on the beach, we were woken by a serious rumble in the morning and we certainly got a bit wet but, as there are no communications on Havelock Island, we did not know what was happening in the outside world. The lack of information and rumours just caused more panic. When we left yesterday, people were still camped out in the hills for fear of another quake. Water and food supplies were low but not desperate. When a lady from the British High Commission met us at the airport, we realised people must have been worried. I didn’t quite expect us to make the news though! Anyway – we and all the other people who were on Havelock Island (the same should go for Neil Island too) are safe; there were no casualties. As we head home, my heart goes out to all those touched by this tragedy.

A bit wet? Wow. Glad you’re OK, and thanks for the e-mail.
Thank f*** for that!
Good to hear that you’re both ok; You had me worried there for a moment!
See you at New year!
Glad to hear you’re both OK. Sounds like you’ve both had a huge slice from Lady Luck. Your Mum and Dad said you were both out there on another oversees trip so I thought I’d checkup on you. Hopefully see you next year. All the best. Simon ( Cousin ).
whew – good that you and Claire are indeed safe and fine. What a nightmare; can’t believe such tragedy striking in practically my own backyard (Marina beach etc) 🙁
Such a relief & joy to hear C’s voice this morning. So happy to hear that you are home, safe and well yippee! For a moment, I really thought we had lost you. The waves looked so powerful, knocking people off their feet as they tried to run to higher ground. Luckily, R has been keeping everyone calm and has been fantastic at relaying information to all of us (thank you R). I just hope that others find their families and friends soon xxx
Hi Both, so very pleased you are back in England safe and well. We have all been worried and our thoughts with you for the last few days. Hope Claire’s Mum is okay all our love John and Karen
Mark, glad you are okay, but gloating about MAKING THE NEWS is rather sick in this situation don’t you think?
“I didn’t quite expect us to make the news though!” you wrote. PLEASE. People are dead and you are gloating about having your NAME in the paper. Has the Western world really come to this? FAME amid Death? Spare us.
I am sorry if that is how you interpreted my comment. I was certainly not intending to gloat in the midst of other people’s suffering. When I wrote that entry, I had not seen any news and was only just becoming aware of the extent of the disaster. I was amazed that our personal situation had received such attention – that’s all.
Some people get all worked up for no reason at all. Who is this person??
